Why is carbon fiber so strong?
Carbon fiber is made from crystalline carbon filaments. They are about 100 times smaller than a human hair. In exact numbers, 0.0002-0.0004 inches in diameter.

The most common carbon fiber precursor uses polyacrylonitrile (PAN), although there are other carbon-based alternatives. In carbon fiber, carbon atoms are tightly bound together. This forms a chain of bonds.

The unique arrangement of crystals makes the composite exceptionally strong. This strength is further enhanced when combined with other carbon fibers.

Therefore, it is the bonded structure that makes the carbon fiber so unbreakable. Although it is very light.

Carbon fibers can be woven into permanent shapes. This enables composite materials to be used, for example, in prosthetics. Carbon fiber is also very light.

You may have heard of tensile strength. This quality allows anything made of carbon fiber to withstand high levels of tension before breaking. This quality makes carbon fiber useful in the manufacture of aircraft.

In addition to being extremely strong, carbon fiber is also incredibly resistant to chemical wear and heat, making it ideal for industrial use.

Finally, carbon fiber is heat resistant. Any product made from this material will not melt easily. This makes it an excellent substitute for steel.

Carbon fiber products can withstand heat up to 1,000 W/mK.

carbon fiber and metal
As we mentioned above, carbon fiber is often used in the manufacture of aircraft. Both carbon fiber and steel have a high level of what is called a "modulus of elasticity". This is a measure of a material's stiffness, or resistance to deformation.

Carbon fiber and steel are strong up to 200 GPa, which is the unit used to measure the modulus of elasticity. What that number doesn't account for is that steel is significantly heavier than carbon fiber. Taking weight into account, we can estimate that carbon fiber is actually five times stronger than steel!
